Seoul is a city where sleek skyscrapers, old low-rise houses, and industrial areas coexist in fascinating contrast. Among these diverse neighborhoods, Euljiro stands out the most. Although it is not a typical tourist destination, many young Koreans visit Euljiro to enjoy its vintage street vibe.

Euljiro-Seoul

Originally, Euljiro was an industrial district filled with printing shops, small hardware stores, metal workshops, and interior construction suppliers. Recently, however, trendy cafés, bars, and restaurants have begun to appear among these old businesses. What makes this area even more interesting is that many of these new spots preserve the structure of old buildings while adding a hip and modern touch. The result is a unique atmosphere somewhat mismatched, slightly mysterious, and incredibly charming. Many places don’t even have clear signs, so young locals often enjoy the thrill of discovering hidden gems tucked away in narrow alleys.

I recently found a fun café in Euljiro that I’d like to introduce: PAINT Coffee & Bar. The name “Paint” seems to reflect the industrial character of the neighborhood. As I searched for the café, I kept wondering, “Is there really a café on this street?” The area looked like it was filled only with workshops and small factories. Then suddenly, I noticed a cute illustration and a small sign that seemed out of place. Still unsure if it was the entrance, I walked further and spotted a faintly charming old house between tall buildings.

Posters of delicious desserts were pasted along a narrow alley, and following them led me to a renovated old house hidden among modern structures.

The café, remodeled from a traditional old building, was absolutely adorable. Orange accents added a playful touch to the cozy interior. Bottles of liquor were displayed along one wall, indicating that it operates as a bar in the evening.

In addition to coffee, they also serve sandwiches and light lunch options. The space isn’t large, but there are cute outdoor bar seats and comfortable sofas and chairs inside, making it feel warm and inviting.

My friend and I ordered coffee, ice cream, and financiers. We tried the “Euljiro Coffee,” named after the neighborhood. It felt almost like a dessert; rich cream, chocolate, and chocolate powder blended into a thick and indulgent drink. The ice cream, topped with fruits and nuts, was perfectly suited to my taste. The financier had a deep buttery aroma and a sweet, nutty flavor that paired beautifully with the coffee.

Simply sitting there and looking at the photos and posters placed around the café felt relaxing and therapeutic. It wasn’t too crowded when I visited, though I’m not sure how busy it gets on other days. There were power outlets near some seats, so I think it would also be a nice place to bring a laptop and work next time.

After visiting the café, I recommend taking a walk around Euljiro. The streets themselves are fascinating due to their strong industrial character. There’s also a famous cold noodle (naengmyeon) restaurant nearby. Why not give it a try? As you wander around, keep your eyes open for hidden restaurants, bars, and cafés scattered throughout the area. It’s a wonderful way to experience the authentic, old streets of Korea.

Before heading home, I took a commemorative photo at a small photo spot outside the café. I’m already planning to visit again with my friend next time!
